Tribe tries to block accord -Asks judge to ban Schwarzenegger pact
As Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders continued budget negotiations Monday, a San Diego-area tribe sued to block implementation of new Indian-gaming compacts that are a key part of the administration's plan to close a $15 billion deficit without raising taxes. The Rincon Luiseno Band of Indians has a hearing Friday in U.S. District Court in San Diego, where it will ask a judge to grant an injunction barring the state from implementing the new compacts Schwarzenegger reached last week with five American Indian tribes that operate Las Vegas-style casinos.
