South Side Chicago Wal-Mart passes one hurdle
Wal-Mart got Zoning Committee approval Wednesday to build a second Chicago store in the South Side's Chatham community, setting the stage for another contentious City Council showdown. Despite the controversy sweeping the nation about low wages and meager benefits for Wal-Mart employees, Zoning Committee Chairman William Banks (36th) and Ald. Tom Allen (38th) cast the only "no" votes. The zoning change will be heard by the full City Council probably in September.
