Aristide Supporters Wreak Havoc in Capital

Loyalists of ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide fired shots, stole food from vendors and burned tires in the slum of La Saline in the capital, Port-au-Prince, as political clashes that have left at least 14 dead continued. Violence erupted as the impoverished country struggled to recover from Tropical Storm Jeanne, which hit two weeks ago, killing more than 1,970 people. In the northwestern city of Gonaives, two emaciated, semiconscious men were brought to a clinic run by Argentine troops. Doctors said it appeared they hadn't eaten in days and were suffering emotional trauma. [more ]
