Weighing the Pros and Cons Of Felon Voting.
Democratic activists say John Kerry is missing in action on an issue that could win him votes in November: voting rights for felons. For years, states have restricted felons' voting rights to varying degrees. Florida, Iowa and several other states strip ex-prisoners of their voting rights permanently unless they prevail in difficult appeals. Other states, like Ohio, are more lenient, but bureaucratic confusion sometimes keeps former prisoners from the polls, activists say. Meanwhile, lists used by states to remove ineligible felons from the voting rolls are rife with problems. Recently, Florida officials, whose "purge list" in 2000 was flawed, had to tear up this year's version.
