Minority Lawmakers in Connecticut concerned about bail bond system
Some black and Hispanic state lawmakers are worried that too many poor minorities are stuck in jail because they can't afford to pay a bail bondsmen. One legislator, state Sen. Ernest E. Newton II, D-Bridgeport, suggested their race could be the reason. Rising bond rates are one of several bail reform issues state lawmakers hope to tackle in the next legislative session, which begins in January. Earlier this year, members of the legislature's Black and Puerto Rican Caucus helped to scuttle one reform bill, claiming some proposals might lead to an increase in bail bond rates, leaving even more poor minorities behind bars.
