Honoring Marcus Garvey's Birthday.
The New Black Panther Party raised the African Liberation Flag and hoisted several contentious issues at City Hall Plaza yesterday.
Jamarhl Crawford, chairman of the Boston Chapter of the NBPP, talked about reparations for slavery, the effect of drugs on black communities, and the police response to surging crime in hot-spot neighborhoods. "We want to see how we can push the envelope,'' said Crawford, 33. He said the party is aimed at outreach to "the streets of our communities, the places where the politicians and the preachers don't go.'' The flag-raising commemorated the 117th birthday of Marcus Garvey, a civil rights activist known for his ``Back to Africa'' call to African-Americans in the early 1920s. The NBPP, based in Roxbury, has been in operation locally since 200o.
