GOP Uses Hispanics for Show (and how exactly do delegates benefit me anyway?)
When George W. Bush formally accepts his nomination to run for another term as president, the Republican National Committee will try to make itself appear as though it is the choice for the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population: Hispanic people. Republican officials are pointing out significant increases in the number of Hispanic people included in the nominating convention and say that Hispanic people will be the largest minority group among the GOP delegates. Also included among the GOP convention trivia is the fact that one state's delegation -- New Mexico -- will be significantly Hispanic in composition (43 percent, to be exact). But these "accomplishments" aren't anywhere near as impressive as the GOP is trying to spin them. Republican efforts to include Hispanic and other non-Anglo people among their ranks still fall short of the Democratic Party, and that's saying something because the Democratic National Convention's Hispanic involvement this year was nothing better than mediocre, and in some regards rather lame.
