Haiti Will Hold Elections in 2005; U.S. Gives $9 Million
Haiti signed an agreement with the United Nations and Organization of American States to hold elections next year, the Associated Press reported, citing UN officials. The U.S. contributed $9 million to cover costs, while the Haitian government put up $3 million, the wire service said, citing UN Development Program coordinator Adama Guindo. Officials are trying to raise $41 million, AP said, citing Guindo. A U.S.-backed government has been in place since former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was removed by a rebellion Feb. 29, the wire service said.
