Has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will have until Sept. 30 to decide whether to sign or veto a bill banning the use of the name "Redskin" as a school mascot, according to his office. The bill would force five high schools, including Tulare Union High School, to drop the word Redskin from uniforms, marquees, gym floors and other locations.Originally when the bill cleared the Legislature Aug. 18, it appeared that he would have 12 days. But the bill has yet to be forwarded to Schwarzenegger's office, so it will be grouped with measures sent to him at the end of the legislative session. He has 30 days to consider these measures. The governor hasn't yet taken a position on the bill, his staff said. The measure, Assembly Bill 858, would prohibit elementary and secondary schools from using Redskin as the name for a mascot beginning in 2006.
