NYT reports, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Mississippi Republican who had to apologize for a cavalier reference to a public hanging, won a special runoff election on Tuesday, defeating the Democratic candidate, Mike Espy, who was trying become the state’s first black senator since Reconstruction.

Like the NYT explained, the vested interests gave the Mississippi votary 2 choices (as opposed to making decisions); they could choose a public master who is a Black person (Espy) or a neuropeon woman who joked about killing Black people (Hyde Smith). Hoping to make the best of a bad situation racists chose Hyde Smith. "Most white people hate Black people. The reason that most white people hate Black people is because whites are not Black people.
