Florida's Disenfranchisement Laws kept over 600,000 non-incarcerated citizens with felony convictions from voting in 2000 [more] and [more]. Additionally, thousands of citizens "Mistakenly" Labeled as Felons lost their right to vote in 2000. It could happen again.

one of seven states that bar felons from voting unlessthey successfully
petition to have their rights restored, a long and cumbersome
process.
- Before the 2000 election, 19,398 voters were purged because Florida said they were felons.
- Many of the voters who were improperly removed from voting rolls were from states that do not bar felons from voting.
- Because felons
are disproportionately Democrats, critics said the improper
purge in 2000 could have been a decisive factor in
the presidential election. Bush won the election by 537 votes.
- This year, the state has flagged more than 47,000 individuals as potential felons.
- The State has refused to make this felon list public.
