Direct damage caused by the Israeli airstrikes will cost $545 million to repair, while indirect damages are estimated at some $700 million, Hamas spokesman Taher al-Nunu said Sunday.
"The total cost of damages caused by the Israeli aggression is $1.245 billion,” al-Nunu said.
The eight-day Israeli operation, officially called Pillar of Defense, completely destroyed 200 homes and damaged another 8,000. The attack also destroyed 42 non-residential buildings, including the Hamas government headquarters, three mosques and a health center, Nunu added. Israeli forces are also known to have targeted the offices of local and international media outlets.
The events in Gaza took place in a developing context. In January 2006, Palestinians voted in a carefully monitored election, pronounced to be free and fair by international observers, despite U.S.-Israeli efforts to swing the election toward their favorite, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah party. But I lamas won a surprising victory.
The punishment of Palestinians for the crime of voting the wrong way was severe. With U.S. backing, Israel stepped up its violence in Gaza, withheld funds it was legally obligated to transmit to the Palestinian Authority, tightened its siege and even cut off the flow of water to the arid Gaza Strip.
The United States and Israel made sure that Hamas would not have a chance to govern. They rejected Hamas's call for a long-term cease-fire to allow for negotiations on a two-State settlement along the lines of an international consensus that Israel and United States have opposed, in virtual isolation, for more than thirty years, with rare and temporary departures.
Meanwhile Israel stepped up its programs of annexation, dismemberment and imprisonment of the shrinking Palestinian cantons in the West Bank, always with U.S. backing despite occasional minor complaints, accompanied by the wink of an eye and munificent funding.

The independent Maagar Mohot poll released on Friday shows 49% of respondents feel Israel should have kept going after squads who fire rockets into Israel. Thirty-one percent supported the government's decision to stop. Twenty percent had no opinion. Twenty-nine percent thought Israel should have sent ground troops to invade Gaza.

Alabama [PDF; report], which held that sentencing minors to life without parole constitutes cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment [text], will not apply retroactively. The appeals court ruled that the Supreme Court decision "is not to be applied retroactively to cases on collateral review ... because the decision is procedural and not substantive in nature." The court also urged Michigan's legislature to bring the state's laws into compliance with the Miller ruling, noting that in Miller, a juvenile is defined as under the age of 18, but in Michigan a juvenile is defined as under the age of 17. Michigan is among the top states for sentencing of minors to life without the possibility of parole, with more than 350 people currently serving life sentences without the possibility for parole for crimes committed in their youth. The first section maps the distribution of death sentences from 2004 to 2009, identifying the most active jurisdictions (in absolute numbers) at both the state and county level. The second section details the distribution of executions. It has a dual focus - first on patterns that have emerged since 1976 and second on those that developed from 2004 to 2009. From [HERE] According to "On the Level," a new report from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the state system is plagued by racial inequalities worse than other Midwestern states or other states of Minnesota's size. It paints the picture of a system that is much more severe on minority children, with more arrests, more prosecutions, and more time in detention.
The report, funded by $13,500 from a U.S. Department of Justice grant, found that minority children are subject to higher numbers of arrests and prosecutions, and spend more time in detention.
Among its findings:
In Minnesota, young people of color are more than three times more likely to be arrested for a delinquency offense than whites. Black teens, in particular, are more than six times more likely to be arrested than their white counterparts.
Young people of color are more than one and a half times more likely to be sent to detention facilities than whites. American Indian teens are detained at nearly four times the rate of white youth.
"Minority"(what is that?) or Non-White teens are more than four times more likely than whites to be prosecuted as adults, and black teens are more than six times more likely to be prosecuted in adult court than whites.
From [HERE] and [HERE] A yellow fever outbreak in Sudan's Darfur region has killed 107 people in the last six weeks, the World Health Organisation reported, warning that the disease could spread all over the country.
The number of deaths from the outbreak is steadily rising, and Sudan is working on an emergency vaccination drive, WHO said on Tuesday. Officials reported last week that 67 people had died in the outbreak. There is no medicinal cure for yellow fever, which is spread by mosquitoes. Doctors treat the main symptoms - dehydration, fever, bleeding and vomiting - and wait for the viral infection to pass.
As part of the emergency response programme, 2.4 million doses of the yellow fever vaccine are scheduled to arrive in the Sudanese capital next week, Dr. Anshu Banerjee of the WHO office in Sudan told AP.
More than 350 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported in Darfur since late September, and more than 30 per cent of people showing symptoms have died, according to a WHO statement. Around 70 per cent are under the age of 29, according to a statement released on Monday by the Sudanese Health Ministry and the WHO.
Scientists in Kenya have found evidence of a new strain of malaria that appears to be resistant to the world's most effective drugs. A similar parasite has been found along Thailand’s border with Myanmar. Now, there is concern that the strain may be spreading. Al Jazeera’s Nazanine Moshiri reports from Kenya's eastern coast.
From [HERE] The "minority" groups that carried President Obama to victory on election day by giving him 80% of their votes are on track to become a majority of the nation’s population by 2050, according to projections by the Pew Research Center. They currently make up 37% of the population, and they cast a record 28% of the votes in the 2012 presidential election, according to the election exit polls.
By 2050, the Hispanic share of the U.S. population could be as high as 29%, up from 17% now. The black proportion of the population is projected to rise slightly to 13%, while the Asian share is projected to increase to 9% from its current 5%. Non-Hispanic whites, 63% of the current population, will decrease to half or slightly less than half of the population by 2050.
The forces behind this transformation are a mix of immigration, births and deaths. The United States is more than four decades into what has been, in absolute numbers, the biggest immigration wave in its history–more than 40 million arrivals. Unlike previous waves that were almost entirely from Europe, the modern influx has been dominated by Hispanic and Asian immigrants.
A number of factors appear to have motivated the practice of lynching. At a fundamental level, lynching was an expression of racism and racial discrimination - it reflected an effort to assert the superiority of whites over blacks. A number of sociologists, including Gunnar Myrdal, have suggested that lynching was a tool used to maintain racial caste distinctions and to keep blacks in a position of subjugation. n34 As such, it served not only to eliminate individual blacks who had violated social norms, but also functioned as a powerful incentive for blacks to "learn their place." Even a summary glance at the statistics presented in [*22] more recent examinations of racial disparities in capital sentencing, to be discussed shortly, demonstrates that racial discrimination is still a powerful force in the decisions the legal system makes about who gets to live and who will die.
From [HERE] Tiny particles of air pollution contain more hazardous ingredients in non-white and low-income communities than in affluent white ones, a new study shows. The greater the concentration of Hispanics, Asians, African Americans or poor residents in an area, the more likely that potentially dangerous compounds such as vanadium, nitrates and zinc are in the mix of fine particles they breathe.
Latinos had the highest exposures to the largest number of these ingredients, while whites generally had the lowest. The findings of the Yale University research add to evidence of a widening racial and economic gap when it comes to air pollution. Communities of color and those with low education and high poverty and unemployment face greater health risks even if their air quality meets federal health standards, according to the article published online in the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Fresno are among the metropolitan areas with unhealthful levels of fine particles and large concentrations of poor minorities. More than 50 counties could exceed a new tighter health standard for particulates proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
A pervasive air pollutant, the fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 is a mixture of emissions from diesel engines, power plants, refineries and other sources of combustion. Often called soot, the microscopic particles penetrate deep into the lungs. The new study is the first to reveal major racial and economic differences in exposures to specific particle ingredients, some of which are linked to asthma, cardiovascular problems and cancer.
Right there in the medical literature for anyone to read for themselves was, basically, proof that the AIDS virus and pandemic was actually predicted years ago by a world famous virologist, among others. They found that top scientists writing in the “Bulletin of the World Health Organization” (WHO) were actually requesting that AIDS-like viruses be created to study the effect on humans. In fact, the Strecker’s unearthed thousands of documents supporting the man-made origin of AIDS.
Meanwhile, the governments were telling everyone that a green monkey in Africa bit some native and started AIDS. As their research continued, it became obvious from the documentation that the virus was not only created as requested, but actually deployed, and now threatens the existence of mankind because it does what it was designed to do: cause cancer in humans via a contagious virus. Eventually, the Streckers came to realize everything the government and the so-called AIDS experts were telling the public was not only misleading, but outright lies… The truth of the matter is:
But what about the green monkey? Some of the best virologists in the world and many of those directly involved in AIDS research, such as Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier, have said that the green monkey may be the culprit. You know the story: A green monkey bit a native on the ass and, bam—AIDS all over central Africa.
There is a fatal flaw here. It is very strange. Because Gallo, Montagnier and those other virologists know that the AIDS virus doesn't occur naturally in monkeys. In fact it doesn't occur naturally in any animal.
AIDS started practically simultaneously in the United States, Haiti, Brazil and Central Africa. (Was the green monkey a jet pilot)? Examination of the gene structure of the green monkey cells proves that it is not genetically possible to transfer the AIDS virus from monkeys to man by natural means.
Because of the artificial nature of the AIDS virus it will not easily transfer from man to man until it has become very concentrated in the body fluids through repeated injections from person to person, such as drug addicts, and through high multiple partner sexuality such as takes place in Africa, among homosexuals and among native American Indians. After repeated transfer it can become a "natural" infection for man, which it has.
Dr. Theodore Strecker's research of the literature indicates that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation made the AIDS virus in their laboratories at Fort Detrick (now NCI). They combined the deadly retroviruses, bovine leukaemia virus and sheep visna virus, and injected them into human tissue cultures. The result was the AIDS virus, the first human retrovirus known to man and now believed to be 100 percent fatal to those infected.
Dr Robert Gello, who first identified the Aids virus in the US, told The Times: 'The link between the WHO programme and the epidemic in Africa is an interesting and important hypothesis. 'I cannot say that it actually happened, but I have been saying for some years that the use of live vaccines such as that used for smallpox can activate a dormant infection such as HIV. 'No blame can be attached to WHO, but if the hypothesis is correct it is a tragic situation and a warning that we cannot ignore.'
Aids was first officially reported from San Francisco in 1981 and it was about two years later before Central African states were implicated. It is now known that these states had become a reservoir of Aids as long ago as the later 1970s.
Although detailed figures of Aids cases in Africa are difficult to collect, the more than two million carriers, and 50,000 deaths, estimated by the World Health Organization are concentrated in the Countries where the smallpox immunization programme was most intensive. The 13-year eradication campaign ended in 1980, with the saving of two million lives a year and 15 million infections. The global saving from eradication has been put at dollars 1,000 million a year.
“Invisible Men: Mass Incarceration and the Myth of Black Progress,” From [HERE] The real problem, as Dr. Pettit sees it, is that imprisoned black men aren’t figured into statistics about the standing of African-Americans. The consequence, she says, is an overstatement of black progress in education, employment, wages and voting participation.
Dr. Pettit, of the University of Washington, has now presented her research in “Invisible Men: Mass Incarceration and the Myth of Black Progress,” published by the Russell Sage Foundation. Among her conclusions:
¶ Among male high school dropouts born between 1975 and 1979, 68 percent of blacks (compared with 28 percent of whites) had been imprisoned at some point by 2009, and 37 percent of blacks (compared with 12 percent of whites) were incarcerated that year.
¶ By the time they turn 18, one in four black children will have experienced the imprisonment of a parent.
¶ More young black dropouts are in prison or jail than have paying jobs. Black men are more likely to go to prison than to graduate with a four-year college degree or complete military service.
¶ Black dropouts are more likely to spend at least a year in prison than to get married.
“Among low-skill black men, spending time in prison has become a normative life event, furthering their segregation from mainstream society,” Dr. Pettit writes.
¶ If inmates were counted, she estimates, the black high school dropout rate would soar to 19 percent and the share of dropouts who are employed would plunge to 26 percent — far more dire than the statistics usually cited. The celebrated voter turnout among young blacks in the 2008 election would drop to roughly 20 percent, about where it was in 1980.
