David Perdue (R-Ga.) was seen on video snatching the cellphone out of the hands of a Georgia Tech student while he was being asked a question regarding the state’s suppression of voter registration on the basis of race. Snatching his phone from his hand is a simple assault and a misdemeanor or felony theft depending upon the value of the phone and could be robbery (a taking by force) which is a felony in many jurisdictions. In the commission of the crimes it makes no difference that the perpetrator gives the stolen item back.
