Poll: Americans Receptive To Puerto Rico Choosing Statehood or Independence

Many Americans believe the United States government should offer Puerto Ricans a say in their future, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics published in the Puerto Rico Herald . 75 per cent of respondents think the U.S. Congress should allow residents of Puerto Rico to choose between statehood or independence. The Caribbean island has been a commonwealth associated with the U.S. since 1898, after the Spanish-American War. Since 1917, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. Citizens, but are not allowed to vote in presidential elections. 68 per cent of American respondents would favour allowing Puerto Rico to become a state.
