Aristide Supporters Wreak Havoc in Capital
/Loyalists of ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide
fired shots, stole food from vendors and burned tires in the slum of La
Saline in the capital, Port-au-Prince, as political clashes that have
left at least 14 dead continued. Violence erupted as the impoverished
country struggled to recover from Tropical Storm Jeanne, which hit two
weeks ago, killing more than 1,970 people. In the northwestern city of
Gonaives, two emaciated, semiconscious men were brought to a clinic run
by Argentine troops. Doctors said it appeared they hadn't eaten in days
and were suffering emotional trauma. [more ]
