Floods in Haiti have killed 600 people and left 1,000 others missing and presumed dead, Prime Minister Gerard Latortue told French radio.  "We have 600 dead and 1,000 missing and, for the most part, presumed dead," Latortue told the radio station France Info. He added that 384 people had been injured by the heavy floods caused Tropical Storm Jeanne pummeled the Caribbean nation and 160,000 had been displaced. "We have launched an appeal for international aide," the prime minister said. "You know Haiti cannot overcome such a disaster on its own." Latortue said there were fears of epidemics breaking out due to the large number of corpses as there was no electricity and the morgues were not operating. [more ] and [more ]
