Border Patrol's Southern California interior unit pulled back

A Border Patrol unit that provoked outrage among Hispanic activists by making more than 400 arrests of suspected illegal aliens in inland areas has been pulled back to the border. The mobile 12-member team is working in southern San Diego County, close to the boundary with Mexico, said Deputy U.S. Border Patrol Chief Paul Blocker, who is in charge of the unit. "We're going to concentrate on our priority mission" of preventing terrorists from entering the United States, Blocker said Friday. In June the unit, based out of the Temecula station, made a series of mass arrests more than 50 miles from the border. Activists and some Hispanic politicians suggested agents were racial profiling and said the arrests created terror in immigrant communities. [more
