Attorney argues for release of Peltier documents from FBI

Supporters of imprisoned American Indian activist Leonard Peltier (pehl-TEER') are accusing the government of withholding documents in his case to cover up misconduct in its investigation 30 years ago. A Peltier attorney was in federal court in Buffalo today to ask a judge to order the release of documents from the F-B-I's field office there. The F-B-I has already given attorney Michael Kuzma nearly 800 pages that he requested under the Freedom of Information Act. But Kuzma wants the 15 pages that the F-B-I withheld, citing national security and other concerns. A government attorney argued that the documents were properly withheld under exemptions set up in the Freedom of Information Act. The judge says he'll make a decision as soon as possible. Peltier supporters want the Buffalo documents -- and documents in other F-B-I field offices in other cities -- as part of their efforts to free Peltier. [more ]
