Armed Group Occupies Haiti Town; French Minister Attacked

An armed group took over a town in southern Haiti and demanded the restoration of the army in the Caribbean nation, Agence France-Presse reported. A group of between 100 and 150 former soldiers occupied Petit- Goave about 70 kilometers (44 miles) southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince, AFP said, citing local radio reports. There weren't any casualties in the incident, AFP said. The group is demanding that the interim government of Prime Minister Gerard Latortue reconstitutes the army that was disbanded under the rule of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Aristide left Haiti in February in the face of an uprising. [more ]
