Hundreds of Thousands Protest Bush in Massive Demonstration in New York
/On a sweltering August Sunday, the huge throng of protesters marched past Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican National Convention opening today, and denounced President Bush as a misfit who had plunged America into war and runaway debt, undermined civil and constitutional rights, lied to the people, despoiled the environment and used the presidency to benefit corporations and millionaires.Fingers jabbed angrily and chants of "No more Bush" grew more passionate as some of the thousands of people protesting the Republican National Convention on Sunday marched by the convention site at Madison Square Garden.Police gave no official crowd estimate. One official put it at 120,000. Organizers claimed a turnout of as many as 500,000. In either case, experts said it was the largest protest ever at a U.S. political convention, taking nearly five hours to shout its way past the Garden.In all, about 200 arrests were reported, but no major outbursts of violence.
