  • Ed Gordon on his European Style: I try to do the best show I can do, so for me, it's not a question on a day to day basis of how you do a show from a black perspective. A black perspective is simply that, unlike most shows, we have an African-American host, and a great deal of the staff here are African-Americans, including those who make the major decisions about what is going to be on this show and what is going to be of import to our listeners. I think too often we throw about the idea of an African-American perspective. Do we say that the "CBS Evening News" is brought to you by a white male perspective? What's the difference there? Our goal is to give you a good program in the hope that anyone who tunes in will find it interesting, and that's always been my goal.[more]

A Case for Race-Consciousness

  • "The American Negro has the great advantage of having never believed that collection of myths to which white Americans cling." -- James Baldwin
To say that race makes a difference means more than simply identifying material disadvantages facing people of color in contemporary America. It also recognizes that race may have an influence on how members of society understand their worlds and each other, and how such understandings may serve to perpetuate racial inequalities in our society.Race matters. Race is among the first things that one notices about another individual. To be born black is to know an unchangeable fact about oneself that matters every day. To be born white is to be free from confronting one's race on a daily, personal, interaction-by-interaction basis. Being white, it has been said, means not having to think about it. Understandably, white people have a hard time recognizing this difference. Most blacks have to overcome, when meeting whites, a set of assumptions older than this nation about one's abilities, one's marriageability, one's sexual desires, and one's morality. Most whites, when they are being honest with themselves, know that these racial understandings are part of their consciousness. Race matters with respect to the people we choose to spend time with or marry, the neighborhoods in which we choose to live, the houses of worship we join, our choice of schools for our children, the people for whom we vote, and the people we allow the state to execute. We make guesses about the race of telephone callers we do not know and about persons accused of crimes. While not every decision we make necessarily has a racial component, when race is present it almost invariably influences our judgments. We are intensely -- even if subconsciously -- race-conscious. Dr. Blynd: The Definition of Snigger

Snigger -- a sold-out smiling Sambo-Negro. 2) a South-Bender offender. Snigggers smile for nothing except an empty mind. They typically have an intellectual base yet are devoid of intelligence, thus promoting the on-going smiling face. They also often giggle and have a frivolous conception of society and scant knowledge of the vestiges of the trans-Atlantic slave trade that brought their sorry ass to shore. Sniggers are traitors and pawns of the oppressors. Watch the company you keep! Don't cross-over unless you are ready to bend over! (See: Straw Boss, Sambo & Criss-Crossover) [more]

Tokens are for the Subway:
Dr. Blynd: The Definition of Black Conservative
Black Conservative -- a lost sheep in master's clothing. A black conservative typically has nothing of his own to conserve with the exception of his or her own double-consciousness. So-called "Black Conservatives"  dodge the reality of their folly and posit that what they are truly conserving is traditional "values" as if values ever had anything to whatsoever to do with morality or ethics. A black conservative unknowingly preserves the differential power-relations and dynamics between those of African descent and their bosses, the overruling overclass elite. A black conservative is a turncoat made of wooly hair with no one to turn to because when it comes to empowering his own people, his master will turn to him and say: "Get your hat, your robe and coat and leave- you're still just a nigger Clarence!" Turning Million Man Marches into Parades:

The Head Negro in Charge Syndrome - The Slow Death of Black Politics

The Head Negro in Charge Syndrome (HNIC) syndrome has witnessed the rise of symbolic leaders--Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan and now Sharpton--who may be charismatic, but are politically unaccountable to the very people they claim to represent. Namely African Americans. This transformation has been underway since the 1970s, but most African Americans have yet to confront it. Because black America has not faced up to the moribund nature of black politics, it has witnessed the rise of these symbolic leaders...This is exactly the HNIC syndrome, in which maverick presidential campaigns and Million Man March franchises are high-profile symbolic actions instead of real programs or policies. Like Jackson's campaigns or Farrakhan in the afterglow of the Million Man March, Sharpton will become a nationally known entity, the putative "president" of Black America, the titular head of a purported progressive insurgency.
